More Sectarian Killing in Iraq.

In a pattern that has become nauseatingly familiar to those of us who pay any attention at all to the horrors of Islam, Shi'ite Muslims have been targeted for slaughter in various locations across Baghdad, taking the lives of almost four dozen people, as far as the body count has taken the relevant authorities. This report comes from the BBC today:

Baghdad hit by wave of deadly car bombs

A series of car bomb blasts in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, has killed at least 47 people and injured many more, officials say.

The blasts targeted markets and car parks in mainly Shia Muslim districts of the city.

There has been a recent upsurge in sectarian violence, sparking fears of a return to the bloodletting of 2008.

More than 5,000 people have been killed so far this year, according to United Nations data.

Monday's blasts struck during Baghdad's morning rush hour, with reports of 13 bombs, most of them in Shia neighbourhoods.

Groups of labourers gathering ahead of the working day were among the bombers' targets.

One of the deadliest attacks was reported from the eastern Sadr City district where seven people were killed and 75 injured in a crowded vegetable market.

Another six were reported killed in Shuala, a mainly Shia area of north Baghdad.

The city neighbourhoods affected also included New Baghdad, Habibiya, Sabaa al-Bour, Kazimiya, Shaab and Ur, as well as the Sunni districts of Jamiaa and Ghazaliya, the Associated Press news agency reports.

'War with terrorism'

No-one has claimed responsibility for Monday's attacks, but Sunni Muslim insurgents have been blamed for much of the most recent violence.

The interior ministry accused rebels linked to al-Qaeda of exploiting political divisions and regional conflicts to sow violence.

"Our war with terrorism goes on," interior ministry spokesman Saad Maan told AP.

The recent upsurge in violence was triggered in April by an army raid on a Sunni Muslim anti-government protest camp near Hawija, north of Baghdad.

Many in the country's Sunni Muslim minority complain of being excluded from decision-making and of abuses by the security forces. Recent raids in Baghdad on suspected al-Qaeda hideouts in mainly Sunni districts are thought to have worsened grievances.

One of the bloodiest attacks over the past few weeks was a double bombing in a funeral marquee in Sadr City on 21 September, which left more than 60 people dead.

Several dozen people died in a wave of attacks on Sunday, including another explosion at a funeral.

A suicide bomber attacked a Shia Muslim mosque south of the city, causing the roof to collapse. More than 40 people are now known to have been killed in that incident.

Irbil, the normally stable capital of Iraq's autonomous province of Kurdistan, was hit by a series of bombings on the same day, killing six members of the security services. Officials said that violence could be linked to fighting between jihadists and Kurds in Syria.

Shi'ites & Sunnis have been at each others' throats for 14 centuries over a squabble in the seventh century over who should succeed to be Caliph, shortly after Mohammed's death. They take the opportunity to murder each other, to demonstrate their religious fervour, when there are no Jews, Christians or Hindus to massacre (see Kenya). It helps that they can call each other non-Muslims & so invoke the word of Allah, as set down in his perfect book:

And kill them wherever you find & catch them. Drive them out from where they have turned you out; for Fitna is worse than slaughter. Koran 2:191

And fight in the way of Allah, & know that Allah is Hearing, Knowing. Koran 2:244

We will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve, because they set up with Allah that for which He has sent down no authority, & their abode is the fire, & evil is the abode of the unjust. Koran 3:151

Therefore let those fight in the way of Allah, who sell this world's life for the hereafter; & whoever fights in the way of Allah, then be he slain or be he victorious, We shall grant him a mighty reward. Koran 4:74

And be not weak hearted in pursuit of the enemy; if you suffer pain, then surely they (too) suffer pain as you suffer pain, & you hope from Allah what they do not hope; & Allah is Knowing, Wise. Koran 4:104

Though God promised that one of two columns (would fall to you), you desired the one that was not armed. But God wished to confirm the truth by His words, & wipe the unbelievers out to the last. Koran 8:7

When your Lord revealed to the angels: "I am with you, therefore make firm those who believe. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads & strike off every fingertip of them." Koran 8:12

And fight with them until there is no more persecution & religion should be only for Allah; but if they desist, then surely Allah sees what they do. Koran 8:39

  1. And let not those who disbelieve think that they shall come in first; surely they will not escape.
  2. And prepare against them what force you can & horses tied at the frontier, to frighten thereby the enemy of Allah & your enemy & others besides them, whom you do not know (but) Allah knows them; & whatever thing you will spend in Allah's way, it will be paid back to you fully & you shall not be dealt with unjustly.
Sura 8

O Prophet! Urge the believers to war; if there are twenty patient ones of you they shall overcome two hundred, & if there are a hundred of you they shall overcome a thousand of those who disbelieve, because they are a people who do not understand. Koran 8:65

Fight & kill the disbelievers wherever you find them, take them captive, harass them, lie in wait & ambush them using every stratagem of war. Koran 9:5

Fight those who do not believe in Allah, nor in the last day, nor do they prohibit what Allah & His Messenger have prohibited, nor follow the religion of truth, out of those who have been given the Book, until they pay the jizya in acknowledgement of superiority & they are in a state of subjection. Koran 9:29

O Prophet! Strive hard against the unbelievers & the hypocrites & be unyielding to them; & their abode is hell, & evil is the destination. Koran 9:73

The Messenger & those who believe with him, strive hard & fight with their wealth & lives in Allah's Cause. Koran 9:88

Allah has purchased the believers, their lives & their goods. For them (in return) is the Garden. They fight in Allah's Cause, & they slay & are slain; they kill & are killed. Koran 9:111

O you who believe! Fight those of the unbelievers who are near to you & let them find in you hardness; & know that Allah is with those who guard (against evil). Koran 9:123

Truly, if the Hypocrites stir up sedition, if the agitators in the City do not desist, We shall urge you to go against them & set you over them. Then they will not be able to stay as your neighbours for any length of time. They shall have a curse on them. Whenever they are found, they shall be seized & slain without mercy – a fierce slaughter – murdered, a horrible murdering. Koran 33:60

So, when you clash with the unbelieving Infidels in battle, smite their necks until you overpower them, killing & wounding many of them. At length, when you have thoroughly subdued them, bind them firmly, making captives. Thereafter, either generosity or ransom until the war lays down its burdens. Thus are you commanded by Allah to continue carrying out Jihad against the unbelieving infidels until they submit to Islam. Koran 47:4
